Job Description

  • We have a dynamic opening for a Legal Project Manager to work with our partners and matter teams to proactively plan, scope, staff, budget, and manage matters.
  • The Legal Project Manager will work with cross-practice teams, but will primarily focus on Intellectual Property litigation matters.
  • The core responsibility of this position is operational, working to develop and implement a best practice approach to legal project management, including identifying and setting-up project phases, managing deliverables against project timelines and budgets, and tracking matter progress throughout the lifecycle.
  • The Legal Project Manager will be expected to operate efficiently, ensuring that matters stay on track and on budget.
  • In this capacity, the Legal Project Manager will:
  • Work closely with matter teams to support the efficient management of client engagements throughout the full matter lifecycle and identify opportunities to provide enhanced efficiency and quality in our service delivery through alternative uses of people, processes, and technology;
  • Provide on-demand support and consultancy for matter teams on matters at set up, delivery and/or review;
  • Be a trusted member of matter teams, focused on service quality, delivery and efficiency, and act as the primary matter team resource for a range of topics, including project planning, fee estimating and budget preparation, fee and scope management, and status reporting;
  • Provide matter teams with legal project management knowledge and support with templates and legal technology systems;
  • Prepare project and communications plans and timelines for internal and external use, as well as regular team meetings and client touch points;
  • Act as a liaison between the firm and clients to ensure adherence to outside counsel guidelines, with focus on staffing, reporting, and working with Finance to meet client billing requirements;
  • Provide regular and accurate reporting of project progress and deliverables and work with clients in terms of streamlining same;
  • Support the implementation, use, and further development of legal project management and practice innovation tools and resources, and help to integrate legal project management techniques into the culture of the firm; and
  • Contribute to the continuous development and improvement of legal project management methodologies and processes, by collaborating with others in the Practice Innovation Department to develop project management resources for lawyers, legal assistants, paralegals, and staff.

Key Skills:

  • Advanced proficiency with Excel and competent with other MS Office tools (Word, PowerPoint) and experience with Document Management Systems, Project Extranets, SharePoint, Microsoft Project, and other project management resources;
  • High-performing and results-driven, with a record of implementing pragmatic, yet creative and effective outcomes;
  • Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to confidently interact at all levels;
  • Excellent time management, organizational, decision-making, and problem solving skills;
  • Willing to challenge and question assumptions and propose alternative and bold solutions;
  • Demonstrated understanding of legal subject area and law firm operations;
  • Self-motivated and able to demonstrate determination and persistence;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all levels within an organization, from senior partners to more junior team members to clients; and
  •  Flexibility to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

Experiance Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of project management experience within a professional, consulting or legal services environment (required);
  • 3-5 years of experience working on litigation matters;
  • Formal project management certification, such as PRINCE2 or PMP, preferred; and
  • Excellent English writing and oral communication skills.
